First things first. Take a few deep breaths and try to stay as calm as you possibly can. I promise you that you’re completely safe angel, and nothing is wrong with your body. If you’ve noticed a spot of blood or feel like it’s coming soon, just know that it’s a completely natural and healthy milestone! It’s your own body’s way of saying “Hey we’re growing up!”

Think of this new chapter as your body’s new monthly reset button. While it may feel a little intimidating at first, you can totally turn this time into a cozy week of self care. Here’s everything you need to feel comfortable, confident, and totally prepared.

Being prepared is the best way to reduce your stress. Keep a cute pouch in your school bag or locker with these essentials:

Options for Protection: Try a few things to see what you like. Most girls start with pads (the “wings” help keep them in place!) or period underwear.

A Spare Change: Just in case! A fresh pair of undies can be a lifesaver.

Wipes: Unscented, sensitive wipes help you feel fresh on the go.

Ziploc Bags: To discreetly dispose of anything if you aren’t near a trash can.

Who says periods have to be “gross” or a “curse”? As a matter of fact, in many cultures, this is celebrated as a “moontime.” So here’s how to make it feel like a cozy retreat rather than an inconvenience:

The Period Uniform: Lean into the aesthetic. Oversized hoodies, your softest leggings, or those fluffy cloud socks. Avoid tight waistbands, your tummy will thank you.

Creating a Vibe: Light a vanilla scented candle, grab a weighted blanket, and put on your favorite comfort movie or a soothing playlist.

The Luxury Shower: Use your best smelling body wash and do a hair mask. Feeling clean and pampered helps wash away any “blah” feelings.

During your period, your body is working way harder! It needs specific nutrients to keep your energy up.

Iron Rich Foods: Replaces what you lose during your flow. Found in: Spinach, beans, or a bit of lean red meat.

Magnesium Rich Foods: Helps relax muscles and can reduce cramping. Found in: Dark Chocolate (yes, really!), bananas, and nuts.

Hydration: Reduces bloating and headaches. Found in: Infused water with lemon or herbal teas (like ginger or peppermint).

Pro Tip: Try to avoid super salty snacks like chips/crisps, as they can make you feel more bloated. Reach for some hydrating fruit instead!

As your hormones are shifting, your emotions are most likely all over the place, and that is completely normal! I notice I always get crankier (or sometimes really upset over the smallest things) right before my period starts!

The Spotting Fact: Your very first period usually isn’t a “red waterfall.” It often starts as brown spotting or light pink marks.

The Math: An average period only lasts about 3 to 7 days. It’s a short chapter of your month!

Talk it Out: Tell someone you trust, your mom, an older sister, an aunt, or a school nurse. They have been through this hundreds of times and can offer the best hugs and advice.

If you feel tired, sleep. Your body is doing a lot of behind the scenes work. Use a heating pad or a warm water bottle on your lower belly if you feel heavy or achy it’s like a warm hug for your muscles.

Remember that you are strong, capable and becoming a woman! Your period is a beautiful part of life (although it doesn’t always feel like it) and try not to worry too much!!

Just to remind you all that it is normal and not “gross”, I’m going to tell you the story of how I got mine, where it happened and how I felt!!

I got my first period at 11 years old, during my very first week of high school. Talk about a “new beginning,” right? I was feeling super cranky that morning and had to drag myself out of bed, only to find a little smudge of blood after going to the bathroom. Now, I have a major phobia of blood (like, fainting level fear), so I was literally distraught, even though I knew what it was.

Luckily, I caught it before school! My mom taught me how to use a winged pad and packed me an emergency kit to take with me that day. When I got home, my dad was so sweet, I’ll never forget it. He surprised me with a celebration bundle of Ferrero Rocher chocolate bars, fruit, and herbal tea. I spent the weekend being a total emotional wreck over random movies, but I made it! The moral of the story? The first day is the scariest part, after that, you’ve totally got this angels.
