With social media slowly taking over the internet, being offline for even a few days can start to feel almost impossible. I know I’m not the only one who’s checked their screen time and instantly regretted it. Somewhere along the way, we began feeling like every moment needed to be shared, posted, or documented.

But the truth is, not everyone needs access to your life 24/7. You’re allowed to disappear for a little while. You’re allowed to go on a spontaneous road trip without posting it to your Instagram story, enjoy a quiet morning without photographing it, or experience something beautiful without turning it into content. Life becomes so much more meaningful when it’s lived for yourself instead of performed for other people.

That being said, stepping away from social media can feel overwhelming at first, especially when scrolling has become such a natural habit. So if you’re looking for a gradual reset, here’s a small list of things you can try the next time you feel tempted to pick up your phone and accidentally lose three hours to scrolling.

In a world where dopamine scrolling has become the norm, our attention spans are slowly getting worse. Instead of getting stuck in endless scrolling, take a few minutes to reset your mind with a meditation. You can find guided ones on YouTube, or simply sit in silence for a bit to clear your mind. Even a short break away from social media can help you feel calmer and more present.

• Replacing 30 minutes of scrolling before bed with a 10 minute guided meditation.

• Sitting in silence for a few minutes instead of immediately reaching for your phone in the morning.

• Taking short breaks during the day without opening TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube.

• Using meditation as a reset during the day instead of automatically opening social media.

• Creating a small nighttime routine with meditation, journaling, or stretching instead of doomscrolling in bed.

Keeping a journal / diary is an amazing way of tracking your progress and achievements, documenting your thoughts, expressing your feelings and holding an archive of memories for your older self to look back on in the future!

• Writing letters to your future self or reflecting on lessons you’ve learned.

• Keeping track of personal goals and noticing how much you’ve grown over time.

• Using your diary as a space to process emotions honestly and without fear of judgment.

• Using journaling as part of a calming nighttime routine instead of scrolling on your phone.

• Writing about memorable days, funny moments, or little details you don’t want to forget.

Vision boards are a great way to map out the direction you want your life to take. Whether it’s building your dream career, evolving your style and the way you present yourself, or becoming the kind of person who sticks to healthier habits, they help turn vague ideas into something clear and motivating. Seeing all of this visually laid out can make them feel more real, intentional, and achievable.

• Spending an evening creating a Pinterest board filled with goals, inspirations, and the kind of life you want to build.

• Making a digital or physical collage of outfits, routines, career goals, travel plans, and habits you want to embody.

• Replacing random scrolling with intentionally saving content that actually inspires or motivates you.

• Updating your vision board monthly to reflect new goals and the person you’re becoming.

• Printing out photos, quotes, and affirmations that make you feel excited about your future.

We’ve become so used to spending our screen time watching endless short clips and reels that we sometimes forget how immersive and meaningful real cinema can be. Instead of half watching a movie while scrolling on your phone, make a list of films you genuinely want to see and give them your full attention. Put your phone away, remove distractions, and let yourself fully sink into the story, the visuals, and the experience of actually watching something with intention.

• Making a list of movies you’ve always wanted to watch instead of endlessly searching for something to scroll through.

• Setting aside one evening a week as a proper movie night with no distractions.

• Putting your phone on silent or in another room while watching so you can fully focus on the film.

• Romanticising the experience with snack boards, friends and cozy blankets.

• Exploring different genres, directors, or older classics you’ve never seen before.

• Watching foreign films or documentaries to experience new perspectives and stories

Sometimes it feels easiest to reach for your phone when there’s nothing else drawing your attention. Instead, try engaging in new hobbies and giving yourself space to experiment with different interests. You might discover activities that feel more fulfilling, more grounding, and a much better use of your time!

• If you’re interested in fashion (aesthetics, outfits, pinterest scrolling) you should try sewing or upcycling clothes.

• If you’re interested in reading (book quotes, BookTok, story posts) you should try journaling or starting a personal reading journal/blog.

• If you’re interested in music content (song snippets, edits) you should try learning an instrument or creating intentional playlists.

• If you’re interested in fitness content (workout clips, body goals) you should try pilates, yoga, or building a simple home workout routine.

• If you’re interested in spirituality (manifestation, astrology, mindset content) you should try meditation, tarot, or daily reflection journaling.

If you think books are boring, you simply have not found the right one! It’s kinda like the people that hate subway, I mean you literally chose the toppings for your own sandwich y’know? Try a bunch of different genres and see which ones interests you most!

• Swapping 20–30 minutes of scrolling before bed with a few chapters of a book.

• Keeping a book on your bedside table so it’s easier to reach for than your phone.

• Carrying a book or e reader so you can read instead of scrolling while waiting around.

• Replacing your “just one more video” loop with “just one more chapter”.

• Setting up a cozy reading experience with tea, blankets, or warm lighting instead of in bed with a phone.

• Exploring different genres until you find stories that actually hook you in

It’s hard to feel focused or productive in a messy or cluttered space. Cleaning your environment and adding small touches like posters, photos, or things you love can make your room feel more personal and grounding. It starts to feel like your own space, not just somewhere you’re in. People often say your environment reflects your mind !, and looking after your space can help bring a bit more clarity and calm into your thoughts too.

• Rearranging your room layout to make it feel fresh and more exciting.

• Creating a cozy corner for reading, journaling, or relaxing instead of scrolling in bed.

• Organising your wardrobe and donating clothes you no longer wear.

• Decluttering surfaces like your desk, bedside table, or floor instead of getting lost in apps.

• Ending the day by resetting your space so tomorrow starts calmer and lighter.

• Adding small personal touches like posters, photos, candles, or things you genuinely love

Instead of letting phone time take over your day, try swapping some of that time for movement, whether that’s sports, stretching, or just getting outside for a walk. It helps you stay active, clear your mind, and feel more energized and productive throughout the day.

• Going for a daily walk instead of reaching for your phone when you feel bored or restless.

• Doing a short yoga session in the morning to stretch your body and start the day grounded.

• Trying pilates at home or in a class to build strength and feel more connected to your body.

• Playing ball sports like netball, football, tennis, or basketball for movement that feels fun and unforced.

• Joining a local sports club or class to make movement more social and consistent.

• Choosing movement based plans with friends instead of sitting and scrolling together.

• A calmer mind is built when you step away from endless scrolling and choose stillness instead.

• The future starts to feel more real when you stop consuming it and start designing it through vision boards and intention.

• Stories feel richer when you give them your full presence, instead of splitting your attention.

• New hobbies appear when you give boredom somewhere else to go.

• A more present life isn’t built by adding more, but by choosing where your attention finally gets to stay.

also i loved six of crows, its a duology and before that there was a trilogy but thats not necessary to read. the book is also fantasy and the characters are thieves
